Magnificent 19th-Century Victorian Inlaid Burr Yew Marquetry Octagonal Coffee Table

A superb and rare Victorian coffee table of octagonal form, circa 1880, exquisitely veneered in richly figured burr yew and finely inlaid throughout.

The striking octagonal top is mirror matched in burr yew, displaying exceptional figuring and depth of colour. A complex marquetry design forms a geometric star motif of triangles, inlaid in satinwood, boxwood and contrasting timbers. The edge is finished with alternating yew and satinwood moulding, with delicate satinwood stringing to the frieze.

A central circular marquetry plaque unites the design, set above inlaid rails. The table stands on four elegant tapering legs, each finely inlaid and supported by inlaid quarter brackets, giving the piece a sculptural, architectural presence.

The yew wood sides are beautifully figured, with a rich, warm tone and a wonderful patina developed over time. The overall craftsmanship is of a very high standard, reflecting the refinement and restrained elegance characteristic of the Victorian period. The table is presented in excellent condition.

Both highly functional and visually arresting, this low table is ideal for a library, study, sitting room or refined contemporary office.
