A Converted Victorian Mahogany Washstand, Circa 1860

19th century
Description

A charming converted Victorian mahogany washstand, dating from circa 1860, of compact proportions. The rectangular moulded top is supported by square chamfered legs with attractively shaped scalloped friezes beneath, above an open undertier and a single frieze drawer retaining its brass drop handle. The base is united by a decorative shaped X-form stretcher.

Originally constructed as a washstand, the piece has been sympathetically converted by the removal of the original superstructure, creating an attractive and practical lamp, side or bedside table. The drawer retains its original hand-cut dovetail construction, and the table displays a warm, well-figured mahogany patina with good colour throughout.

A versatile Victorian occasional table, equally suited to a traditional or contemporary interior.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian washstands were essential pieces of bedroom furniture during the 19th century, designed to support ceramic basin and pitcher sets prior to the introduction of modern indoor plumbing.

They were typically crafted from solid woods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, utilizing traditional joinery like hand-cut dovetails, carved aprons, and turned or square tapered legs.

Authentic period examples demonstrate signs of period hand-tooling, natural timber oxidisation, historical drawer construction, and occasionally converted surface tops where ceramic basin inserts were filled.

Converted washstands function exceptionally well as compact bedside tables, hallway accent stands, or tall plant displays in contemporary and classic schemes.

Maintain mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft cloth, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources or sunlight, and applying beeswax sparingly to nourish the wood.
