This pair of late 19th-century Kashmiri bookends originates from India. The objects take the form of vertical panels with arched tops, standing on a dark base. Composed of papier-mâché and wood finished with black and gold lacquer, the surfaces display intricate floral arabesques, chinar leaves, and hand-painted bird motifs in green and red. The original decoration remains intact throughout, and the signature Ganemede appears on the base. Each bookend measures 14.5 cm high, 10.75 cm wide, and 10.75 cm deep. Placed upon a bookshelf in a gentleman's library or study, these decorative items organise collections of literature while bringing traditional Indian craftsmanship into an interior space. The contrasting dark background highlights the dense patterns, while the compact scale ensures they fit easily amongst volumes on standard shelves.

Kashmiri lacquerware originated in the Kashmir region through Persian stylistic influences, evolving into a celebrated craft where artisans decorated papier-mache and wooden objects with intricate miniature floral and avian motifs.

These pieces are typically constructed using a shaped wood or moulded papier-mache core, primed with gypsum paste, hand-painted with fine squirrel-hair brushes, and sealed under layers of protective lacquer.

Authentic items display dense hand-painted patterns such as chinar leaves, arabesques, or birds, rendered with micro-fine detail under a smooth varnish, often paired with unpainted or plain bases showing light wear.

Position them on a dark wood study desk, a marble mantelpiece, or styled bookshelves where their gold metallic detailing and rich jewel tones contrast against modern literature and clean backdrop surfaces.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid using water or chemical cleaners that might compromise the lacquer, and display them away from direct sunlight and damp environments.
