Heritage, History & Craftsmanship
This large and highly decorative 19th-century brass sculpture depicts a mythical dolphin, rendered with sweeping movement, boldly articulated scales, and a wonderfully expressive face. The dynamic upward curve of the tail and the confident modelling of the body give the piece a strong sculptural presence, intended for close visual appreciation within an interior setting.
Although unmarked, the sculpture displays characteristics typical of English Victorian decorative metalwork, likely produced in the mid- to late-19th century. During this period, London and Birmingham were major centres of brass and bronze founding, supplying both domestic and export markets with high-quality ornamental objects.
The crisp detailing - particularly in the scales, facial expression, and flowing form - reflects casting techniques common to the era, such as sand casting and, in finer examples, lost-wax methods. The quality of modelling suggests the influence of academically trained designers, and it is entirely consistent with the cross-channel exchange of skills that followed the arrival of French-trained craftsmen in Britain during the later 19th century.
Over time, the brass has developed a rich, nuanced patina, with tonal variation that enhances the depth of the form and confirms its age. The sculpture was clearly intended as a decorative domestic object, suitable for display on a mantelpiece, console, or cabinet, where its mythological subject and expressive presence could be appreciated.
