Hoshiarpur in Punjab, India, became renowned during the late 19th century for intricate metal inlay work, known locally as Tarkashi. Craftsmen embedded fine brass or copper wire into hardwoods like rosewood or sheesham to create detailed geometric and floral motifs, often produced for domestic use and export during the Anglo-Indian period.

These items are typically constructed from dense local hardwoods such as Indian rosewood (sheesham) or teak. The decorative patterns are crafted by hammering thin brass or copper strips into pre-carved channels on the wood surface.

Authentic pieces feature hand-chiselled wire channels, slight natural variations in the metal inlay depth, and age-related oxidisation on the brass work. Genuine examples also show natural wear along hand-cut handles and the underside of the wooden base.
