Chinese porcelain mug, c. 1760, Qianlong Period. The barrel shaped mug, hand painted in underglaze blue, with a large basket of flowers, between sprigs of flowers, all between beaded bands.

The moulded handle, painted with stylised plants.

Height – 13.2 cm, 5 1/4”.

Width (Handle to rim) – 15 cm, 5 7/8”.

Diameter – 10 cm, 3 7/8”.

Condition – Minor rim frit. No restoration.

Qianlong Chinese export porcelain refers to fine ceramics produced during the reign of Emperor Qianlong (17351796) specifically for export to European and Western markets. These pieces often combined traditional Chinese underglaze blue painting techniques with utilitarian European shapes, such as tankards, mugs, and armorial dishware.

These vessels were hand-thrown using kaolin clay and decorated by hand with cobalt oxide pigment applied directly to the unfired body. A clear glaze was then applied over the painted design before a single high-temperature firing, producing the characteristic underglaze blue colourway on white hard-paste porcelain.

Authentic Qianlong export ceramics generally exhibit hand-painted brushwork with variations in cobalt tone, firing imperfections such as minor pinholes or glaze pops, and distinctive unglazed foot rims.
