Rare Georgian George III Mahogany Secretaire Pembroke Work Table Fitted Drawer With Key C1790
£1,185 $1,586 €1,388
Antique Georgian George III Mahogany Secretaire Pembroke Table Circa 1790 .
An exceptional, highly versatile and rare solid Mahogany dual-purpose table.
We bring to you this exceptional and incredibly rare English Secretaire Pembroke table made in the George III period C1790, the table seamlessly combines elegance with hidden multi-functional utility. Designed as a dual-purpose breakfast and writing/work table, it is crafted entirely from high-quality solid Mahogany embellished with Ebony accents. The table features two drop-down leaves supported by traditional wooden finger joints, allowing it to adapt from a compact side table to a 2 seater breakfast table or generous workstation. The top surfaces remain perfectly flat, completely free from the bowing, twisting, or splitting that often affects pieces made of solid timber from this era. It stands upon beautifully turned, slender legs that epitomise the refined Georgian aesthetic, terminating in their original solid brass cup cas...tors on brass wheels, which retain a magnificent natural patina.
The true sophistication and rarity of this piece lie in its ingenious drawer configuration, offering two fully functioning drawers to the front and matching dummy drawers to the reverse to allow the table to sit comfortably in the centre of a room. The upper opening is a deep secretaire drawer, whilst the lower is a large, full-length, baize-lined open drawer that provides expansive storage traditionally used for textiles or documents. Both drawers feature fine ebony strung edges, solid ebony turned knobs, and charming kite-shaped ebony keyhole escutcheons. The true keyholes to the front show a gentle, authentic wear from a long life of daily use, adding to the rich narrative of the piece.
Opening smoothly on fine dovetail joints with thin, scratch-moulded sides, the top secretaire drawer pulls out to reveal a comprehensive writing, reading, and hobby suite that spans nearly the full depth of the table at 605mm. Inside, an adjustable writing surface has been sympathetically restored with fresh green baize. This surface cleverly lifts and tilts to a comfortable and adjustable angle, resting securely against the table top. Beneath this adjustable slope lies a hidden recess originally designed for papers, which provides a highly practical modern storage solution where a small laptop or tablet can be securely locked away out of sight. Positioned directly behind the writing surface is a further deep compartment, perfectly proportioned to house A4 documents, a ledger, or a modern 13-inch MacBook. Flanking the writing section is the original fitted inkwell compartment, alongside dedicated stationery and tool divisions that run the entire depth of the drawer.
The drawers maintain their original warded locks fitted to both drawers, both of which operate smoothly off the same well-fitted key, the key is a replacement key and not its original.
The original polish has been preserved throughout, displaying a wonderful depth of colour and a rich, authentic patination that only centuries of care can produce. Having undergone a sympathetic restoration in our workshop to ensure all elements operate flawlessly, this structurally stable and beautifully crafted piece functions just as beautifully as a contemporary home workstation as it did when it was created during the reign of George III, it remains a very useful and usable antique in the modern home.
Condition Report This table is in outstanding, structurally solid condition, with no loose joints or movement in the frame. The solid Mahogany tops are flat, stable, and completely free from splits or warping. Both drawers run smoothly and operate exactly as they should. The finish is original throughout, exhibiting a superb patina, rich colour, and minor historic marks consistent with age and use. The green baize to the interior writing slope and t
