This early 19th-century Georgian Gaudy Welsh earthenware teapot is decorated in the Oriental Coloured Hexagon pattern. The glazed white piece has a hexagonal fluted body with gently rounded panels, a round moulded foot, a curved spout, a high-arched handle, and a fluted lid with a leaf-shaped finial. Hand-painted rust red and cobalt blue motifs appear across the body and lid alongside lustre highlights and faded gilding. Minor discolouration and a small old hairline are present. The teapot measures 19 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 26 cm deep. In a modern home, this piece suits display on a sideboard top in a dining room, kitchen, or living room. It functions as a decorative tabletop accessory or a functional vessel for serving tea during gatherings.

FAQs

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding abrasive cloths that can strip overglaze enamels. Do not submerge in hot water or place in modern dishwashers, and handle carefully by the body rather than the spout or handle.

Position the teapot as a central accent on a dining room sideboard, open kitchen shelf, or inside a glass display cabinet. Styling alongside neutral ceramics or polished brass highlights the rich historic colours.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible brushstrokes in the enamel, slight pattern variations, and characteristic pink or copper lustre accents. They are often unmarked or display simple painter marks alongside lightweight lead-glazed earthenware construction.

These teapots were crafted from opaque earthenware or ironstone, moulded into fluted or geometric shapes. Decorators applied underglaze cobalt blue before adding hand-painted overglaze enamels and metallic lustre highlights.

Gaudy Welsh refers to 19th-century British earthenware pottery decorated with vivid hand-painted patterns, influenced by Japanese Imari designs. Produced primarily in Wales and Staffordshire between 1820 and 1860, these pieces feature cobalt blue, rust-orange, and metallic lustre accents.
