Japanese Kutani Porcelain Teapot With Vase Stand, Meiji Period, C.1890

A decorative Japanese Kutani porcelain teapot dating to the late Meiji period, c.1890, accompanied by a complementary vase that functions beautifully as a stand. The teapot bears a Kutani-zo mark to the underside, meaning ''Made in Kutani''.
 
The decoration combines the celebrated Kutani aka-e and kinran-de traditions, with rich iron-red enamels and extensive gilding applied in scrolling arabesques, geometric motifs and intricate borders. The bamboo-form spout and handle are particularly distinctive and lend the piece considerable character.
 
Painted reserves depict a karako figure beneath a pine tree, birds, flowers and delicate landscape scenes. The miniature painting is finely executed, with carefully rendered details throughout. The accompanying vase is decorated with a bird amongst flowering plants and matching ornament, creating an elegant display when paired with the teapot.
