Large Meiji Japanese Satsuma Moriage Charger with Peacocks, Wisteria and Peonies

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A magnificent large Japanese Satsuma charger from the Meiji period, decorated with an exceptionally rich and elegant composition of peacocks, flowering peonies, trailing wisteria and small birds among blossom. Measuring an impressive 31 cm in diameter and weighing 1379 grams, this is a substantial and highly decorative gallery-scale piece, designed to command attention both as a collector’s object and as a refined interior focal point.

The quality of the decoration is particularly strong. The peacocks are rendered with remarkable precision: the long tail feathers are built up with fine raised moriage work, delicate gilded outlines and carefully placed white and gold details. The flowers are painted in soft pink, coral, white, green and aubergine tones, with extensive gilt outlining to the leaves and branches. Even at close range the surface shows confident, painstaking handwork, with numerous tiny raised enamel and gilt details that demonstrate the skill of an accomplished Satsuma workshop.

The reverse bears a gilt-on-brown rectangular mark with the Shimazu family mon above the characters 薩摩, reading Satsuma. This is not a personal artist’s signature, but it is a classic Satsuma-style mark consistent with Japanese export wares of the late Meiji to early Taishō period, circa 1890–1915.

This is a superb decorative and collectable example of high-quality Japanese Satsuma ware: large, beautifully composed, technically rich and preserved in outstanding condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Satsuma ware from the Meiji era is characterised by a cream-coloured earthenware body, fine crackle glazing, and elaborate polychrome enamelling. Pieces often feature intricate moriage raised relief motifs, gilded highlights, and scenes depicting nature, flora, or fauna.

Satsuma moriage ceramics are crafted from earthenware clay finished with a clear crackle glaze. The moriage technique involves applying raised slip or liquid clay decorations before hand-painting with polychrome enamels and gold leaf or gold paint.

Authentic Satsuma items display a fine, consistent crackle glaze over a light cream clay body rather than stark white porcelain. They feature detailed hand-drawn artwork, subtle surface texture from raised enamels, and frequently bear Japanese character marks or seals on the base.

A Satsuma charger can be styled on a dark wood sideboard using a display stand, or wall-mounted as focal decorative art. It complements both traditional schemes and minimalist modern interiors by introducing pattern, texture, and historical interest.

Satsuma ceramics should be dusted gently using a clean, soft brush or dry microfibre cloth. Avoid immersing the piece in water or applying chemical cleaning agents, as liquid can penetrate the crackle glaze and damage delicate gilding or enamelling.
