Royal Worcester Blush Ivory Pot-pourri Jar and Cover, Shape 1720, 1903

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A finely decorated Royal Worcester blush ivory pot-pourri jar and cover, produced in England in 1903. The piece is shape number 1720 and belongs to the factory’s classic blush ivory period, combining a sculptural covered form with rich gilding and finely hand-painted floral decoration.

The vessel was intended for pot-pourri, a mixture of dried flowers, lavender and aromatic oils used to perfume interiors. In late Victorian and Edwardian homes, such jars were both decorative objects and elegant air fresheners, especially suited to refined drawing rooms and cabinet displays.

The soft blush ivory ground is one of Royal Worcester’s most recognisable finishes. It was inspired by the warm tones of carved ivory objects fashionable in the late 19th century and was finished in delicate shaded ivory and blush tones with the distinctive satin surface associated with Worcester production.

The body is decorated with hand-finished floral sprays, gilded outlines and scrolling ornament. The lower section has spiral fluting descending into a scalloped border, while the foot and cover rim are enriched with raised basket-weave moulding and rich gilding. The original domed cover is decorated en suite with the vase and finished with a gilt finial.

The underside bears the puce Royal Worcester mark corresponding to 1903, together with Registered Design No. 227399 and shape number 1720.

A strong cabinet-scale example of Royal Worcester blush ivory, with fine decorative presence, original cover and excellent preservation.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in the late Victorian period, Royal Worcester blush ivory features a soft, satin ivory ground achieved through specialised glaze spraying, decorated with delicate hand-painted floral motifs and gilded accents.

These vessels were crafted from fine porcelain, hand-decorated with enamel pigments, finished with a matte glaze, and detailed with hand-applied burnished gold gilding on the pierced cover and fluted mouldings.

Authentic examples bear the printed Royal Worcester factory mark on the base, often accompanied by a system of dots or date letters indicating the precise year of manufacture, alongside a shape code number.

A blush ivory jar functions effectively as an accent on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or within a glazed display cabinet, introducing subtle warmth through soft floral tones and classical proportions.

Preservation requires gentle dry dusting with a soft microfibre cloth or natural hair brush, avoiding water immersion, chemical cleansers, or friction that could strip fragile gilded highlights.
