Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Edwardian Sutherland table dates from circa 1905 and is fashioned from rich brown mahogany with a smooth polished finish. The compact piece has a narrow rectangular top surface, rectangular drop leaves featuring canted corners, and slender slatted end supports joined by a central lower stretcher shelf. The splayed legs terminate in small brass castors with wheels. Visible details include grain patterns across the timber surfaces, vertical slats on the ends, and small metallic castors at the floor level. The dimensions are 69 cm high, 68 cm wide, and 72 cm deep when open. Positioned at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair in a living room, study, or drawing room, the table serves as a convenient surface for books, drinks, or small lamps. The drop leaves fold down easily to save space when a smaller footprint is required, making the item versatile for daily use in compact spaces or larger country house interiors alike.

FAQs

A Sutherland table is a space-saving drop-leaf table featuring a narrow central top section and deep hinged leaves, popularised during the Victorian and Edwardian eras for serving tea in compact spaces.

These tables were typically crafted from solid mahogany or walnut, featuring narrow stretchers, dual pivoting legs or swinging gate supports, and small brass castors on splayed feet.

Authentic pieces exhibit slatted or turned end-supports, original ceramic or brass castors, genuine patination on mahogany surfaces, and period-accurate rule joints on the drop leaves.

Due to its slim profile when folded, a Sutherland table serves effectively as a sofa side table, a hallway console table, or a flexible occasional surface in small living areas.

Dust regularly with a soft lint-free cloth, nourish the timber with natural beeswax polish annually, and keep the table away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage or joint loosening.
