This nineteenth-century Victorian boxwood apothecary pill rounder by Ayrton and Saunders belongs to the category of medical treen. Formed from solid timber, the object possesses a warm brown colour with a smooth tactile finish and a rich aged patina. Concentric turning marks are visible across the circular surface, complemented by a shallow recessed centre and a distinct beaded rim along the exterior. General wear from historical use appears throughout the wood. Measuring approximately 15 cm in diameter, this compact treen piece is suitable for display on a bookshelf within a gentleman's library or inside a curiosity cabinet. It functions as a decorative collectable for enthusiasts of medical antiques and historic apothecary implements.

Historically used by 19th-century pharmacists, a pill rounder was employed to shape handmade medicinal paste into uniform spherical pills.

They were traditionally turned from dense hardwoods such as boxwood, which offered smooth surfaces and durability required for precise pharmaceutical preparation.

Authentic pieces feature turned construction, light surface wear from historic use, rich natural patination, and occasionally maker marks stamped into the wood.

These small treen objects function well as decorative curios on bookshelves, styled within a vignette alongside leather-bound books or displayed in a collector glass cabinet.

Dust regularly with a dry soft cloth and occasionally apply a light coat of natural beeswax polish, keeping the object away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
