Antique Victorian Burr Walnut Writing Table

19th century
Description

A superb antique Victorian burr walnut writing table / desk. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1840-1850 period.

The quality is outstanding, this is as fine a writing table of the period as you could find. This has lovely and quite petite proportions with a slight bowed shape to the side edges, the burr walnut grain patterns are gorgeous throughout. There is beautiful carving under the corners, this stands on finely detailed turned legs, there is a gorgeous inset tooled green leather writing surface. The back of the desk is nicely finished so this can be used as a free standing item.

The condition is excellent for its age, we have just had this re-polished. There is just some extremely minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

At first this writing table looks quite low, however the kneehole height is higher than an average desk.

Width – 42 inches , 107 cm

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian burr walnut writing tables emerged during the 19th century, characterised by figure patterns formed from root burl wood, gold-tooled leather writing surfaces, and carved turned legs.

These tables feature timber frames veneered with figured burr walnut, fitted with inset leather writing surfaces, hand-dovetailed drawer boxes, and turned wooden knobs.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints inside frieze drawers, natural wear to the leather insert, original brass lock escutcheons, and period-correct turned leg profiles.

Position the writing table near a natural light source or against a textured focal wall, pairing it with a streamlined contemporary chair to create a balanced work space.

Dust regularly using a soft microfibre cloth, apply a natural beeswax polish along the wood grain twice yearly, and keep the item away from direct heat to prevent veneer movement.
