This French farmhouse table dates from 1880, exemplifying a rustic country style with robust construction. Constructed from solid timber with a warm brown colour, the piece displays a thick plank top and a sturdy H-stretcher base. Visible details include square legs, pegged joinery with visible wooden pins, and a smooth waxed finish that highlights the natural grain of the wood. The proportions provide generous seating space for dining or gathering. Measuring 75 cm in height, 216 cm in width, and 77 cm in depth, this substantial item serves as a practical focal point for a kitchen or dining room. In a contemporary interior, the table functions well as a central dining surface or a spacious work table, blending traditional craftsmanship with daily utility.

FAQs

A traditional farmhouse table is characteristically robust, featuring a thick wooden plank top and a practical stretchered base designed for daily family utility in rural homes.

These tables were typically constructed from durable hardwoods or softwoods such as oak, pine, or elm, utilising mortise and tenon joinery secured with exposed wooden pegs.

Authentic pieces exhibit genuine surface wear, natural timber shrinkage over time, hand-cut joinery details, and smooth wear along lower stretchers from foot placement.

A farmhouse table can be paired with contemporary dining chairs or a clean-lined linear pendant light to contrast historic craftsmanship with modern aesthetic elements.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a coat of clear beeswax annually to protect the timber without causing build-up.
