A Shin Gunto was the military sword issued to officers of the Imperial Japanese Armed Forces between 1935 and 1945. These swords were designed to emulate traditional samurai katanas while incorporating standardised military fittings for service during the Second World War.

These military swords typically feature steel blades fitted into wooden hilts wrapped in ray skin and fabric cord. The protective scabbard, or saya, is generally constructed from painted steel, brass fittings, or lacquered wood.
