A Very Large Pair of French Porcelain Hand Painted Figures Circa 1860 69cm High

19th century
Description

This superb, exhibition-sized pair of mid-19th-century hand-painted porcelain figures is French, produced by the Letu and Mauger factory of L'Isle-Adam near Paris, between 1854 and 1893.

This very large high quality pair of figures depicts a young man and a lady, both opulently dressed in fine 18th century costume and captured in a pose where the man is greeting the young lady.

The highly decorative figures are produced in fine bisque porcelain and are beautifully hand painted in bright colours with lots of areas with lustrous, smooth and raised gilding.

These large and impressive figures are in very good condition. The female carries the factory mark on the underside, which is a bold capital L and M in a rectangular boarder.

The male figure shows some slight firing shrinkage to the underside produced in the kiln during manufacture.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-to-late 19th-century French porcelain figures frequently depict 18th-century courtly figures, characterised by elaborate costume detail, hand-painted polychrome decoration, and historical revivalist themes popular during the Second Empire period.

These statuettes were crafted from hard-paste porcelain, cast in individual moulds, and hand-decorated using polychrome enamels and gilded accents prior to kiln firing.

Authentic period examples display crisp moulding lines, detailed hand-painted facial features, weighted ceramic bases, and occasionally incised or painted maker marks on the underside.

Large scale figures function as symmetrical accents when positioned on a sideboard top, flanking a mantelpiece mirror, or displayed inside a glass cabinet to contrast against clean architectural lines.

Dust surfaces regularly using a dry, soft camel-hair brush. Avoid using liquid chemical cleaners or immersing the porcelain in water, as moisture can damage cold-gilding and enamel glazes.
