This late Victorian French four-fold room divider screen is constructed from leather, wood, brass, oil paint, and gilt leaf in a French Chateau style. The four panels display a hand-painted design of botanical fauna, stylised parrots, fruit, and floral scrollwork set against a warm gold background, edged with a scalloped upper border and secure brass studding. Visible elements include deep green foliage, rich red and pink floral clusters, and blue birds, alongside authentic wear such as aged patina on the gilt-ground leather and subtle surface craquelure. Standing 176 cm high, 184 cm wide, and 2 cm deep, the screen is suited for placement within an empty corner, bedroom, or living space to divide a room or add privacy.

FAQs

Folding screens originated in ancient East Asia and were introduced to Western Europe during the 17th century. In France, hand-painted and gilded leather screens became prominent features in grand homes, serving both as mobile draft excluders and decorative space partitions.

Traditional construction involved wooden internal frames covered in stretched cattle hide leather. The panels were decorated using oil pigments and metallic leafing, then secured along the edges with decorative brass upholstery tacks.

Authentic pieces show natural signs of age, including subtle surface craquelure, patinated brass studding, and minor wear along the panel hinges. Hand-painted foliage and floral motifs will exhibit varied brush strokes rather than modern printed uniformity.

A multi-fold screen can be positioned in an empty corner to introduce height and textural interest, or used behind a bed frame as an ornate headboard. It can also function as a visual partition in open-plan living areas.

Position the screen away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the leather from drying out or cracking. Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth and consult a specialist restorer before applying any cleaning products or conditioners.
