Antique Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany Side Table

1900 - 1920
Description

A smart and elegant antique Edwardian inlaid mahogany side table. This was made in England, it dates from the 1900-1910 period.

It is of fine quality and is a very useful size. The raised edges give this a great look, it would be perfect as a drinks serving table among other uses. It stands on beautifully tapered legs, the top has fine inlays of satin wood around the border and in the centre.

We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some historical wear and patina here and there remaining beneath the polish, seen in the images.

Width – 30.5 inches , 77 cm

Depth – 16.5 inches , 42 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian inlaid furniture, produced between 1901 and 1910, is defined by lighter proportions compared to heavy Victorian pieces, frequently drawing inspiration from 18th-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite styles. It commonly features fine timber veneers decorated with boxwood or satinwood stringing and central marquetry motifs.

These tables were primarily crafted from solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, decorated with contrasting timber stringing such as boxwood or satinwood. Construction typically incorporated traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, hand-cut corner blocks, and tapered legs.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise hand-cut inlay work, genuine timber patination, and proportional lightness. Inspecting the underside reveals hand-planed secondary woods, historical wear patterns, and period-correct joinery methods rather than modern fasteners.

An Edwardian tray-top table functions effectively as an accent piece beside contemporary seating, as a compact bedside table, or within an entryway. Placing minimalist lamps or ceramics on its surface creates a balanced visual contrast between classic cabinetmaking and modern design.

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer lifting and timber discolouration.
