This extra large Chinese style porcelain moon flask dates from 1930 and belongs to the Chinoiserie style. Finished in a blue and white glaze, the body is decorated with hand-painted underglaze motifs of a carp swimming among lotus blossoms, complemented by a bulbous stopper rim and twin dragon-shaped handles on the neck. The piece exhibits a flattened circular body set upon a rectangular base, with a small nibble to the base noted as a sign of age. The dimensions measure 84 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 23 cm deep. Positioned on a sideboard top, this vessel functions as a striking table centerpiece within an English Country House interior. The arrangement of aquatic plants and fish covers the front face in intricate detail, leading upward to the stylised foliage patterns surrounding the narrow neck and spherical top. Placed prominently in a living area or dining space, the piece adds traditional decorative interest to any substantial surface without requiring additional styling.

FAQs

A moon flask, or bianhu, is a flattened circular ceramic vessel inspired by historical metallic pilgrim bottles, traditionally produced in China featuring twin scroll handles and underglaze decoration.

These vessels are crafted from fine kaolin clay, painted with cobalt oxide underglaze decoration prior to firing, and sealed with a clear glaze in a high-temperature kiln.

Authentic pieces display characteristic cobalt blue glaze variations, foot ring wear consistent with usage, hand-painted artwork, and traditional potting marks.

Large moon flasks serve as architectural focal points on sideboards, consoles, or mantelpieces, contrasting effectively against neutral backdrops and contemporary woodwork.

Dust gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or soft brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or soaking in water to protect delicate glazes and potential structural hairline cracks.
