Staffordshire flatback figures were popular 19th-century English earthenware ornaments created to commemorate notable historical events, royalty, military alliances, and cultural figures. Designed with a flattened reverse side, they were manufactured specifically to sit flush against domestic fireplace mantelpieces.

These figures were press-moulded using local Staffordshire earthenware clay. After an initial firing, details were decorated using rich underglaze colours, predominantly cobalt blue, followed by overglaze enamel painting and lead glazing.

Authentic 19th-century pieces generally feature press-moulding seam lines, small air vent holes underneath or behind the base, fine craze lines in the clear glaze, and unglazed rim bottoms. They are typically lighter in weight than modern heavy reproductions.

Victorian ceramic figure groups are often arranged on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console table alongside antique books and brass accent pieces to create a curated, historical focal point within modern or traditional interiors.
