This seventeenth-century Dutch tile belongs to the Dutch Golden Age style and takes a square form made from tin-glazed earthenware and clay decorated with blue and white cobalt pigment. The piece possesses a hand-painted soldier with a spear surrounded by corner motifs on a crazed white glaze background. Visible details include blue fleur-de-lis corner motifs, an extensively crazed glaze surface, and rough chipped edges along the base and sides. Measuring 13.3 cm high and 13.3 cm wide, the tile fits a mantelpiece placement in a rustic farmhouse setting today. One can display the piece upright on a traditional hearth mantel or place it on a small decorative stand on a shelf to highlight the hand-painted cobalt artwork.

17th century Delft tiles are Dutch tin-glazed earthenware ceramics produced primarily in Delft and Rotterdam, characterised by cobalt blue hand-painted imagery on an opaque white enamel glaze base.

Delft tiles were crafted from refined local clay, coated with an opaque lead-tin glaze, and hand-painted with metallic oxide pigments before receiving a single high-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic period tiles display characteristic corner motifs, tin-glaze crazing, red clay visible at chipped edges, tiny corner pinholes from wooden drying boards, and unique hand-painted variations.

Individual antique tiles are commonly displayed on plate stands, mounted within custom box frames, or installed as decorative accent pieces in splashbacks and fireplace surrounds.

Clean gently with a soft dry cloth or a lightly dampened microfiber cloth using distilled water, avoiding abrasive chemicals or submersion that could damage unglazed porous edges.
