Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Shellwork pictures originated in the eighteenth century and reached peak popularity during the Victorian era as a fashionable pastime and decorative folk art. Artisans and hobbyists gathered natural seashells from coastal areas to craft intricate floral arrangements, urns, and geometric patterns inside protected framed cases.

These compositions utilise various small natural marine shells, including limpets, cowries, tellins, and bivalves, mounted onto cardboard, wood, or velvet backings using natural adhesives. The completed designs are usually housed in glazed shadow boxes or molded giltwood frames to protect the fragile organic material.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically feature hand-carved or period-appropriate molded gesso and gilt frames, hand-cut glass, and natural shell variations without modern synthetic glues. Inspection of the reverse often reveals historical backing papers, aged wood planks, or period framing hardware.

Shellwork pictures serve as tactile focal points when hung above sideboards, console tables, or integrated into a gallery wall mix. Combining the natural texture of shells and gilded framing creates visual depth against both modern neutral backdrops and traditional dark wall colours.

To preserve shellwork artwork, display it away from direct sunlight, dampness, and high humidity, which can weaken vintage adhesives. Keep the item sealed behind glass and clean the outer frame gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth without liquid solvents.
