Pearlware is a refined white earthenware introduced in the late 18th century, characterized by a small amount of cobalt added to the lead glaze. This technique created a slightly blue-tinted finish, particularly visible where glaze pooled in crevices, and remained popular through the early 19th century.

Patterns were applied using a transfer-printing method where copperplate engravings were printed onto tissue paper using cobalt oil-based ink, pressed onto the unfired body, and washed off before glazing and final firing.

Authentic pearlware displays a blue tint in glazed corners and underside joints, subtle manufacturing irregularities on unglazed foot rims, and visible seam overlaps in hand-applied transfer prints.

Group small items together on open shelving, sideboards, or kitchen dressers alongside plain neutral ceramics or natural wood surfaces to highlight their detailed patterns.

Wash gently by hand in warm water using mild detergent, avoiding prolonged soaking, harsh chemical solvents, or dishwasher use to prevent crazing and loss of structural integrity.
