Pearlware is an earthenware body developed in Staffordshire during the late 18th century, characterised by a cobalt-tinted glaze that creates a subtle bluish pooling in the crevices. It was widely produced throughout the Georgian and early Victorian eras for decorative and utilitarian tableware.

These pepper pots were thrown or moulded from refined earthenware clay, pierced by hand at the leather-hard stage, fired, decorated with printed transfer patterns using cobalt oxide pigment, and finished with a clear glaze prior to a final firing.

Authentic pearlware typically displays slight blue pooling around foot rims and crevices, fine age-related crazing in the glaze, lightweight earthenware construction, and characteristic unglazed base rims or hand-punched top holes.

Small ceramic casters can be grouped on a kitchen shelf alongside other blue and white transferware, styled on a dining table condiment tray, or displayed on a dresser ledge to add historical interest to modern spaces.

Clean pearlware gently using warm water and a mild detergent, avoiding prolonged soaking or abrasive scrubbers that could compromise craze lines or transfer details. Ensure pepper pots are completely dry internally before storage.
