Brass cup castors on small wheels: pattern used in the Regency years.
Reeded frieze moulding beneath the top: typical joinery of the period.
Even surface colour across the leaves: careful matching and consistent light exposure.

This Regency period mahogany Gillows model imperial extending dining table combines two D-shaped ends with two intermediary leaves to form a grand dining surface. The timber displays a rich brown colour with a polished finish, complemented by applied frieze mouldings and rounded corners. The whole rises on ring-turned, reeded legs that taper down to brass cups and castors. Measuring 72.5 cm high, 224 cm wide and 104 cm deep when fully extended, the table is designed to seat diners comfortably in a formal dining room. In a modern interior, this dining table serves as the focal point for hosting dinner parties and family meals. Its classic silhouette and warm timber tones suit both traditional and contemporary dining spaces, pairing easily with a variety of dining chairs. The extending mechanism provides flexibility for everyday family use as well as larger gatherings.

Regency dining tables, originating in early 19th-century Britain, are characterized by elegant classical proportions, finely turned or reeded legs, high-grade mahogany wood, and practical extension mechanisms developed for grand entertaining.

These tables were primarily constructed using solid and veneered West Indian mahogany, fitted with brass castors, metal runner mechanisms, and precision-turned legs.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct joinery, original brass hardware, timber patination consistent with age, smooth telescopic extending mechanisms, and occasionally maker stamps from renowned cabinetmakers of the era.

A Regency dining table can be integrated into contemporary spaces by pairing it with streamlined modern dining chairs or modern lighting fixtures, creating a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Care involves regular dusting with a soft cloth, applying high-grade beeswax polish along the grain, protecting the surface from direct heat and liquid spills, and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels.
