Aesthetic Movement Coffee/games Table

19th century
Description

A striking, high quality coffee/games table from the Aesthetic movement, circa 1875. Slightly reduced in height and now much more desirable as a dual purpose piece of furniture. Typical of he Aesthetic movement is the ebonized backdrop to the wealth of decoration. The top is mainly of Amboyna with Kingwood cross banding , framed with a brass rounded border . The apron beneath has the mos fantastic array of Sevres style medallions all framed in an intricate brass rail. All this is supported by gilt decorated columns, which match the pair of stretchers, which give way to 4 Amboyna inlaid splayed legs. When swivelled and opened up it reveals the most incredible and vibrant red baize, bordered with beautiful tooled leather, then ,Ebony and Amboyna cross banding, with the most delicate Boxwood and green coloured Pearwood stringing to finish. This interior also tells the secret that for its 160 years, it has seen little or no use. Possibly an expensive gift that was too good to use. Presented in super condition and ready to enjoy.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 19th century, Aesthetic Movement furniture emphasizes art for arts sake, featuring delicate proportions, ebonised wood finishes, Japanese-inspired motifs, and decorative gilding or inset porcelain panels.

Craftsmen frequently used ebonised hardwoods contrasting with figured wood veneers such as burr walnut, along with gilt-bronze mounts, brass stringing, and hand-painted porcelain or Sevres-style plaques.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural surface patination, period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, genuine cast brass or ormolu fittings, and slight wear to the dark ebonised finish revealing the underlying timber.

This type of table functions effectively as a sofa table, hallway console, or accent piece, where its dark tones and detailed decorative elements provide contrast against neutral modern walls.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid damp cleaning or chemical solvents near hand-painted porcelain and gilt metal mounts, applying specialized microcrystalline wax sparingly to preserve the timber finish.
