Confit pots were utilitarian earthenware vessels used in 19th-century southern France to preserve meats such as duck or goose in cooked fat. The preserved food was stored in the vessel and kept cold by burying the lower unglazed half in cellar earth.

These vessels were hand-thrown using local earthenware clay, fitted with lateral ear handles, and partially dipped in a lead-based glaze. The interior and top exterior were glazed to render them non-porous, while the lower body remained raw terracotta.

Authentic pieces display hand-thrown irregularities, a distinctive dip line in the glaze, and surface wear or chipping around the rim and handles. The unglazed bottom often exhibits natural patination or soil staining consistent with subterranean storage.

A confit pot serves as a focal accent on kitchen islands, open shelving, or sideboards. It can function as a vessel for dried florals, utensil storage, or stand as an isolated sculptural object within rustic and contemporary spaces alike.
