This Victorian rosewood card and console table dates from 1850 in the English Country House style. The dark brown timber displays a highly polished finish and rich grain pattern. The piece incorporates a swivel top above a frieze adorned with carved acanthus motifs, supported by a heavy turned central pedestal and a quadform base terminating in carved scroll feet. The solid construction stands 71 cm high, 91 cm wide, and 45 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this table works well beside the front door or in a hallway as a console, or functions in a living room as a card table when opened. The slim proportions suit narrow entranceways or reception rooms, providing a surface for lamps, decorative items, or occasional use.

Popular during the 19th century, a Victorian rosewood card table is an occasional table designed for social card playing, featuring a hinged fold-over top that rotates to open into a larger surface.

These tables were constructed using dense rosewood veneers over solid hardwood frames, supported by turned central columns, carved friezes, and quadform plinth bases.

Authentic period examples feature a swivel-and-fold leaf mechanism, concealed interior storage wells beneath the lid, rich rosewood figure, hand-carved detailing, and scroll feet.

When folded closed, a card table functions as a hallway or entryway console table, providing a flat surface for lamps, decorative ceramics, or framed artwork.

To preserve rosewood, position the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer lifting, and apply natural beeswax polish along the grain periodically.
