Antique Victorian Mahogany Writing Table

19th century
Description

An outstanding antique Victorian mahogany writing table / desk. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1880-1890 period.

This is of wonderful quality and is a very useful size, with lovely proportions. It stands on beautifully turned baluster legs, terminating in brass casters, there is an ebonised trim around the lower edge of the top and accentuating the legs as well. There are two drawers with nicely turned handles and fine, hand cut dovetailed joints. There is an inset leather top with gold tooled edges, the leather has a beautiful colour which compliments the mahogany nicely.

The back is nicely finished, so this can be used as a free standing item.

We have had this recently re-polished, it is in excellent condition for its age, with a gorgeous all round patina.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian writing table is a 19th-century desk crafted predominantly from solid mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, featuring a gilded or blind-tooled leather inset top and frieze drawers for storage.

These desks were built using dense hardwoods like mahogany, detailed with hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, brass castors, turned timber drawer knobs, and high-grade gilded leather writing surfaces.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers, original brass castors, natural wear on the leather writing inset, and hand-turned legs typical of 19th-century cabinetmaking.

Position the table near a window or in a dedicated home office, pairing it with a streamlined modern task chair or an upholstered armchair to balance traditional proportions with modern function.

Dust the wood regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically while keeping the leather inset clean with a dry cloth and specialized leather conditioner away from direct sunlight.
