Antique French Military Flintlock Musket Measure

19th century
Description

Unusual brass double powder and shot measure used by the French military or huntsmen. This tactile object has a wonderful patina and colour and is still in working order even if a little stiff when adjusting the measuring cups. The larger cup has plomb grammes engraved on it, the slightly smaller one has poudre decigrammes engraved on it. Both cups are, unusually, lipped for ease of pouring.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A brass powder measure was used by military personnel and marksmen to accurately dispense consistent charges of black powder into muzzle-loading firearms such as flintlock muskets.

Most historical powder measures were constructed from solid brass or bronze because non-ferrous metals are spark-resistant, durable, and resistant to corrosion caused by black powder residue.

Authentic period pieces typically feature stamped volumetric graduations, lathe-turned central handles, soft wear around sliding elements, and a natural, uneven patina from historical handling.

These compact metal antiquities serve as curious display items on a bookshelf, within a shadow box frame, or alongside leather-bound volumes on an office desk.

To preserve the historical surface, avoid abrasive metal polishes and harsh chemical solvents. Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth and apply microcrystalline wax to guard against oxidisation.
