Horn Powder Flask with Boché-type Patent Adjustable Charge, 19th Century. Brass Fittings.

19th century
Description

good original example of a 19th century sporting horn powder flask fitted with a Boché-type patent adjustable brass charger head.

The natural cow horn body of pleasing translucent tone is mounted with a calibrated volumetric charger engraved with dram graduations (including 2½, 3 and 3½), complete with spring-indexed rotating collar and tear-drop operating lever.

The brass retains an honest mellow patina with light surface wear consistent with age and use. The horn shows expected shrinkage to the collar and minor surface marks but no visible cracks. Presented on a brass display stand which is likely a later addition and not original to the flask.

A well-made and mechanically complete example of this desirable mid-19th century sporting form.

Condition Report:

Mechanism appears complete and moves correctly. General surface wear and age spotting to brass. Horn with typical age shrinkage at mount and light handling marks. Later stand.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A powder flask with an adjustable charge features a spring-loaded or manual valve mechanism near the nozzle that allows the user to measure out a specific volume of gunpowder before pouring it down the barrel of a muzzle-loading firearm.

Nineteenth-century powder flasks were commonly constructed from flattened animal horn, embossed copper, sheet brass, pewter, or leather, paired with cast brass valves and pourers to prevent sparks.

Authentic pieces typically display signs of hand-machined brass threads, natural surface patina or oxidisation, period patent stamps or maker marks, and light wear around the suspension loops and shut-off valves.

These decorative objects are typically displayed on custom metal or wooden stands, placed alongside antique leather books, inside glazed display cabinets, or positioned on a study desk or mantlepiece.

Keep the flask in a humidity-controlled environment to prevent the natural horn from drying out or warping, dust lightly with a soft brush, and avoid harsh chemical cleaners on the patinated brass fittings.
