Coquilla nut is the hard, dense seed of the South American palm tree Attalea funifera, widely utilised in the 19th century for intricate turned and carved treen items such as needle cases, buttons, and boxes.

Craftsmen typically used a lathe to turn the dense nut into precise cylindrical forms, followed by hand-carving with micro-chisels to create detailed reliefs, threaded screw joints, and geometric patterns.

Authentic pieces exhibit a natural dark brown grain that takes a high polish, fine lathe-turning marks inside the hollowed sections, and an aged patina with shrinkage cracks characteristic of mature vegetable ivory.

Small objects like needle cases can be displayed on a bookshelf inside a glass cloche, arranged on a mantelpiece tray, or placed within a desk vignette to add texture and historical interest.

Preserve coquilla nut objects by keeping them away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying an occasional light coat of microcrystalline wax to maintain the moisture balance of the material.
