This fabulous Himalayan demon mask which dates from around the end of the 19th century originates from Nepal and has it''s red wax seal which shows that this was legally inspected and cleared for export.This antique demon mask is nicely hand carved in wood with a prominent tongue and fangs which most likely depicts a protective deity or a local demon/spirit intended to ward off evil.This would have been worn in sacred dances or local village ceremonies.This mask which has a beautiful dark patina looks wonderful on the later metal and marble display stand.An interesting piece of ethnographic folk art and would make a wonderful display piece.Date: 19th century.
