Famille Verte, meaning green family, is a ceramic palette dominated by green enamel overglazes, originating in China during the Qing dynasty and later emulated by European factories like Derby to satisfy the Western appetite for oriental designs.

Derby porcelain from this era was typically crafted from a soft-paste or bone china body, thrown or moulded, and then hand-painted using metallic oxide enamels before being fired in a kiln.

Authentic pieces often feature period-appropriate factory marks such as the crowned D or anchor and cross daggers, hand-painted details with characteristic iron-red and green pigments, and crazing or wear consistent with age.

Antique plates can be mounted on walls as part of a curated gallery display, placed on specialised plate stands on bookshelves, or styled on sideboards to add historic texture and colour to contemporary spaces.

Antique porcelain should be washed by hand using mild, non-abrasive soap and lukewarm water when necessary, avoiding dishwashers, harsh chemicals, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to protect the fragile enamel glazes.
