FAQs

French games tables gained immense popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries as parlour pastimes became a central feature of upper-class social life. These pieces were specifically crafted to accommodate various tabletop pursuits, including chess, checkers, and card games, often featuring integrated boards and storage drawers for pieces.

Cabinetmakers typically utilised dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and fruitwoods, frequently employing intricate marquetry and parquetry techniques to create the inlaid playing surfaces. Traditional joinery, hand-carved details, and dovetailed drawers were standard craftsmanship markers of the period.

Authenticity is determined by examining the wood patination, hand-cut joinery, type of screws or nails used, and the precision of the inlaid wood work. Genuine antique pieces exhibit natural wear patterns, shrinkage cracks appropriate to age, and hand-planed surfaces rather than modern machine finishing.

This piece works effectively as a statement console or an occasional desk in a study, living room, or reception space. Pairing it with minimalist modern seating creates an intentional contrast that highlights the historic craftsmanship without overwhelming the room.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting and fading. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the historic finish.
