For Sale by Gilt and Gesso
Description

A 19th Century Kashmiri Papier-Maché Desk Tidy Ink and Pen Stand, Hand Painted.

An exquisite 19th century Kashmiri handmade and hand-painted ink stand with elaborate, fine detail, circa 1850-1870.

A very fine quality ink stand with wonderful hand painted decoration and colours, measuring 29cm wide and 20cm deep in mostly excellent structural and original condition, minus the ink pots which are easily replaceable and often no longer used.

Please note the underside is missing a foot, it sits correctly and doesn’t lean awkwardly and the foot is to the back but may want replacing. Currently selling as it is and sensibly priced to reflect the four or, we may end listing and have foot replaced and relist at a revised price.

A rare and early Kashmiri ink stand, this would have been an important desk piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kashmiri papier-mache, known locally as Kar-i-Kalamdani (pen-case work), developed in the Kashmir region through Persian influence. During the 19th century, production adapted to European demand, resulting in functional desk items such as inkstands, blotting books, and pen trays featuring intricate hand-painted decoration.

Traditional Kashmiri papier-mache involves pasting layers of paper pulp and cloth over wooden moulds. Once dried and shaped, the surface is coated with plaster, smoothed, painted with mineral pigments, highlighted with gold leaf or powder, and sealed under multiple coats of protective lacquer.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-applied painted details with subtle variations in line weight, genuine gold leaf accents, and a natural age craquelure across the lacquer finish. The undersides and interior compartments frequently show structural wear, darkening, and hand-formed paper pulp texture.

Place the inkstand flat on an office desk, console table, or library shelf as a functional catchall or decorative focal point. Pairing lacquered items alongside natural timber surfaces or leather desk blotters highlights the rich hand-painted contrast.

Dust gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid using water, liquid chemical detergents, or solvent-based polishes, as moisture and harsh chemicals can cloud or dissolve the vintage lacquer and damage underlying paint layers.
