A Folk Art / Victorian Carved and Polychrome Painted Wooden Puppet Head

19th century
Description

The bearded man with remains of real hair and staple suspension loop. Fitted on a later oak and felt covered base. Attributed to Clowes and Sons ‘Excelsior Marionette’ late 19th/Early 20th Century.

Approximately 15cm High.

Note: In the 1860s travelling marionette shows were a common sight either on their own or at fairgrounds. This peripatetic nature makes them one of the most ephemeral of Victorian entertainments, since they left no buildings, very few printed bills, posters, or scripts, and only a handful of actual puppets survive. Travelling shows were performed by family troupes, and amongst the most famous was the Tiller-Clowes troupe who were also well-known puppet makers.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian folk art puppet head is a hand-carved wooden component crafted for nineteenth-century marionette or glove puppet theatre. These pieces were made by regional artisans or itinerant performers to represent specific comedic, theatrical, or folklore characters.

Traditional puppet heads were predominantly carved from softwoods such as pine, lime, or fruitwood. They were finished with gesso coatings, hand-painted polychrome pigments, and frequently featured applied elements like natural hair, glass eyes, or fabric additions.

Authentic nineteenth-century puppet heads display signs of functional wear, such as surface craquelure on the paintwork, natural timber shrinkage, and attachment points for strings or control rods. Evidence of hand-tool marks and historical repairs also indicate genuine period construction.

Folk art sculptures are commonly placed on museum-style metal stands to emphasize their sculptural qualities. They serve as focal accent pieces when styled on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or curated display cabinets alongside modern artwork.

Painted wooden items should be kept in stable humidity environments away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber cracking or paint flaking. Dusting should be executed gently using a soft, dry brush rather than liquid cleaners or waxes.
