Description

An antique Regency period mahogany tilt-top table, dating to the early 19th century (circa 1810–1830). The table features a square top with softly rounded corners, supported on a tripod base with brass casters, allowing for easy movement when in use.

The table is centred by a distinctive twisted (spiralled) column, a characteristic decorative detail of Regency design. The tilt-top mechanism allows the table to be stored flat against a wall when not in use, making it both practical and elegant.

Regency furniture, spanning the late 18th to early 19th century, is characterised by classical symmetry, heavily influenced by ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian designs, frequently featuring rich timbers such as mahogany.

These tables typically utilise dense hardwoods like solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneers applied to secondary woods, featuring hand-turned pedestals, iron catch mechanisms, and dovetail or dowel joints.

Authentication relies on examining timber grain patination, hand-cut joinery, forged iron hardware beneath the mechanism, and natural age-related wear rather than machine-tooled uniformity.

A tilt-top table functions effectively as an accent piece in a living room, displayed in its upright position as decorative art against a wall or lowered horizontally beside a sofa for functional surface space.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room humidity, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber fading, and occasionally applying pure beeswax rather than modern silicone-based polishes.
