A pair of late nineteenth-century Volkstedt porcelain sweetmeat figures from Thuringia displays children acting as harvest gatherers next to basket dishes on rococo scrollwork bases, embodying the Rococo Revival style from 1880. Dense, high-fired porcelain receives a hand-painted finish featuring soft polychrome enamels in shades of blue, pink, and yellow, enriched with applied floral decoration and gold leaf accents. Minor small chips appear on some applied leaves and foliage, reflecting age and handling, while the undersides show an underglaze factory mark. The boy figure stands 15 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 8 cm deep, while the girl is slightly shorter. These ornamental sweetmeat dishes suit placement on a sideboard top in a dining room or living area, bringing classical European porcelain artistry to a tabletop display. The pair functions as decorative accent pieces for collectors of antique German ceramics or Victorian table settings. They provide visual interest through sculptural modelling and detailed floral motifs without requiring active use, acting as historical conversation pieces for period interiors.

FAQs

Sweetmeat figures are decorative porcelain table ornaments featuring small integrated baskets or bowls designed to hold dried fruits, candied nuts, or confections during formal meals.

Thuringian manufactures utilized hard-paste porcelain fired at high temperatures, decorated with hand-applied enamel pigments, gilding, and intricate press-moulded floral elements.

Authentic Volkstedt pieces typically display factory makers marks under the glaze on the base, such as the crown and V or crossed pitchforks, alongside fine hand-painted polychrome decoration.

These decorative items can be placed on a dining room sideboard, inside a glazed display cabinet, or styled on a mantelpiece alongside modern ceramics to create visual contrast.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or cosmetic brush to clean delicate raised elements. Avoid submersing in water or using abrasive chemicals that could damage the enamel and gilding.
