A Pembroke table is a form of small drop-leaf table with hinged flaps on either side, which became highly popular during the late 18th and early 19th centuries in Britain. Characterised by slender legs and frequently featuring a single drawer, these versatile tables were originally designed for multiple uses such as writing, light dining, or working.

Authentic period pieces were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, often featuring finely turned legs, brass castors, and dovetailed drawer construction. Secondary woods like pine or oak were commonly utilised for drawer linings and internal framing.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage appropriate to age, original brass hardware or indents where fixings sat, and hand-turned wooden elements. Look for honest patination and signs of manual woodworking rather than modern machine tooling.

The piece functions effectively as a compact desk, a side table in a living space, or placed against a wall with one leaf dropped to save floor space. Its rich timber tones complement both neutral modern backdrops and traditional period settings.

Maintain timber furniture by keeping it away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent wood splitting. Clean surfaces with a soft, dry cloth and periodically nourish the wood with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
