An unusual 19th century bronze and agate obelisk rotating tortoise desk ornament.

The bronze tortoise sits upon a marble base, surmounted by an agate obelisk; the whole rotates 360 degrees upon the base. There are some lights signs of wear commensurate with age but generally the piece remains a very good condition indeed and displays well.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century desk seals were functional implements used to impress wax for securing correspondence, often doubling as decorative desk ornaments reflecting the owners taste.

These pieces typically combined cast bronze or brass mounts with carved hardstones such as agate, carnelian, or bloodstone, often mounted on marble or stone bases.

Authenticity is determined by the natural patination of the bronze, hand-carved detailing on the metal and stone elements, and traditional mounting techniques consistent with period manufacturing.

Such items serve as focal points on home office desks, bookshelves, or mantelpieces, adding textural contrast and historical character to contemporary spaces.

Clean surfaces gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical polishes that can strip natural patination or damage delicate mineral stones.
