FAQs

Regency papier-mache, often produced in Birmingham and London during the early 19th century, involved layering paper pulp with glue and resin to create durable, lightweight items that were then lacquered and decorated.

These items were typically constructed from compressed paper pulp or multiple layers of paper bonded with size, coated with dense layers of japan black lacquer, and frequently embellished with gold leaf or hand-painted details.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-gilded or painted motifs, a deep japanned surface with age-appropriate craquelure or wear, and often feature turned wooden bases or subtle irregularities characteristic of period manufacturing techniques.

These objects can be displayed flat on a dining table as traditional bottle stands, or placed on a sideboard or coffee table to hold small decorative objects and provide textural contrast against contemporary finishes.

To preserve the finish, keep papier-mache items away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture, dust gently with a dry, soft cloth, and avoid using any chemical cleaners or liquid polishes.
