Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, encompassing various revival styles that favoured ornate craftsmanship, rich dark woods like walnut and mahogany, and decorative veneers.

Cabinet makers of this era frequently utilised solid secondary timbers like pine or mahogany as a carcase, overlaid with highly figured decorative veneers such as burr walnut, secured with animal glues and joined using traditional mortise and tenon or dovetail joints.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining construction methods, hand-cut joints, natural patination, timber shrinkage patterns, and the presence of hand-applied finishes like shellac or beeswax rather than modern synthetic lacquers.

Pairing historical wooden furniture with contemporary neutral upholstery and minimalist decor creates a balanced, layered aesthetic that highlights the natural grain and craftsmanship of the antique piece.

Maintain timber furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting, and occasionally nourish the surface with traditional microcrystalline wax or beeswax.
