FAQs

Drop leaf and gateleg tables gained widespread popularity in Britain during the 17th century and continued to be manufactured through the Edwardian and Art Deco periods, valued for their space-saving flexibility in smaller domestic kitchens and dining rooms.

Authentic period tables are typically constructed from solid quarter-sawn oak, utilizing traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, hinged drop leaves, and swing legs to support the extended flaps.

Authenticity is identified by examining the timber grain, hand-cut screws, historic patination, wear patterns on the feet, and traditional hand-planed surfaces rather than modern machine-milled uniformity.

Pairing a dark wood antique table with modern minimalist seating creates a balanced, eclectic aesthetic that bridges historical character with clean, contemporary lines.

Protect the timber surface by avoiding direct sunlight, using coasters and placemats, maintaining consistent indoor humidity levels, and occasionally feeding the wood with natural beeswax.
