FAQs

Masons Ironstone was patented in 1813 by Miles Mason, designed as a durable, highly vitrified ceramic body that offered an affordable alternative to imported Chinese porcelain while featuring vibrant, exotic motifs.

Ironstone ceramics are crafted from a dense mixture of china clay, feldspar, and flint, often hand-painted with enamels or decorated using transfer-printing techniques before being glazed and fired at high temperatures.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining the impressed or printed backstamps, the weight and density of the vitrified ceramic body, and the characteristic hand-finished enamel colours used during the period.

Antique ceramic chargers can be mounted on walls as focal artwork using specialist plate hangers, or displayed flat on sideboards and console tables to introduce rich heritage texture and colour to modern schemes.

Antique ironstone should be washed by hand using warm water and mild detergent when necessary, avoiding abrasive cleaning agents, dishwashers, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to protect the glaze and enamel details.
