Meiji Japanese Satsuma Koro Signed Kizan, With Shimazu Crest, C.1885

£875    $1,182    €1,004
A finely painted Japanese Satsuma koro (incense burner) from the late Meiji period, c.1885, signed Kizan beneath the underglaze-blue Shimazu clan crest. The globular body is decorated in the desirable gosu-blue palette, with swirling cobalt waves rising into chrysanthemum sprays picked out in thick, raised gold. Despite its small scale, the quality of enamel and gilt work is fully in line with the better Kyoto-school export wares.

The domed metal lid (likely brass/bronze) is pierced with radiating ribs around a chrysanthemum boss. One inner wire is now absent but visually unobtrusive. The original carved wooden stand accompanying the piece is included for display and corrects the object’s intended presentation as a cabinet piece.

Signed Kizan works of this calibre remain highly sought after for their controlled palette, miniaturist detail and strong association with late-Meiji luxury export ceramics.
