This 18th century German Westerwald tankard stands 20 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. The cylindrical vessel is formed from grey salt-glazed stoneware finished with a rich cobalt blue glaze and an incised bird motif centred within a lobed panel. The tankard is fitted with a hinged pewter lid featuring an acorn-shaped finial, a ball thumbpiece, and surface marks including the date 1770 alongside the letters B GLFA. Additional visible details include raised moulded borders around the rim and base and a single minor chip to the rim. Suitable for display on a bookshelf in a gentleman's library, this decorative salt-glazed stoneware piece brings historical character to an interior. The combination of glazed ceramics and metallic hardware provides textural contrast while maintaining its traditional function as a lidded drinking vessel. It suits a collector of historical European pottery or period tablewares.

Westerwald stoneware is a type of salt-glazed ceramic produced in the Westerwald region of Germany, historically recognised by its light grey body combined with rich cobalt blue and occasionally manganese glazes.

These vessels were crafted using dense local clay fired at high temperatures with salt thrown into the kiln to form a durable glaze, decorated with cobalt oxide mineral glazes, and fitted with pewter lids.

Authentic period examples feature hand-incised or stamped decoration, scratch-blue detailing, slight asymmetry in the thrown clay, and aged pewter mounts with characteristic oxidisation.

Designers frequently position these ceramics on bookshelves, sideboards, or mantelpieces as sculptural accent pieces, layering them alongside dark timber or contemporary minimalist decor.

Clean stoneware by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth or gently wiping with warm water and mild detergent; avoid abrasive scrubbers or chemical cleaners on pewter to preserve its natural patina.
