Description

A charming pair of Derby porcelain figures known as the “Idyllic Musicians”, produced during the Bloor period, c.1815. The man plays flageolet and tabor; the woman originally held a triangle. Both figures stand before green mound supports on pierced rococo scroll bases richly gilded and enamelled in the vivid Bloor-period palette of pink, purple and deep blue with gilt stars.

Introduced c.1760 (Bradshaw E9, p.95), the models were revived under Robert Bloor as catalogue No. 311 (Bradshaw pp.353–354), who reinterpreted classic Derby groups with brighter enamels and heavier gilding.

Both figures are incised 311. The male bears an impressed “Bloor Derby” mark; the female is signed “Derby” in red script.

Male: 20 cm × 11 cm × 11 cm / 7.87? × 4.33? × 4.33?; 487 g

Female: 20 cm × 11 cm × 9.5 cm / 7.87? × 4.33? × 3.74?; 461 g

Condition

Overall a well-preserved pair with strong colour and gilding.

Boy: both hands and flageolet professionally restored; tabor beater missing; small chip to back hem of cloak; right thumb missing.

Girl: left hand reattached; retains fragment of triangle beater; lower triangle corner present on apron; losses to applied decoration on apron.

Enamels and gilding otherwise in very good antique condition.
