FAQs

Italian apothecary jars, historically known as albarelli or drug jars, were produced from the Renaissance onwards to store medicinal herbs, ointments, and syrups in monastic and commercial pharmacies.

These vessels were typically formed from local earthenware or terracotta clay, hand-thrown on a wheel, and finished with lead-based glazes featuring slip-trailed or hand-painted inscriptions.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as crazing in the glaze, historic chips, mineral deposits, uneven throwing marks, and characteristic iron-based pigging or oxidation.

Such pieces function effectively as sculptural centrepieces on console tables, open shelving, or complemented by dried botanicals to add historical texture to contemporary spaces.

Maintain the integrity of the antique glaze by keeping the object away from direct moisture, cleaning only with a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth, and avoiding harsh chemical detergents.
